We have practical problems in dealing with 11 million or more illegals. My suggestion is to figure out which want to be citizens and insist they do what's necessary: Work, learn the language, stay off welfare, obey the laws. The other thing we need to do is to take a hammer to the welfare system, which Democrats are dangling like a big, juicy worm and urging immigrants to snap at the bait so they can become members not of a prosperous society, but a stalled-out underclass. Many of the illegals are potential conservatives and potential Republicans -- they have lower unemployment and crime rates than the public generally, and lots are Catholics with conservative social views. Democrats are actively recruiting them all, knowing that some eventually will become citizens and voters. Conservatives need to work out some strategy for dealing with those who stay. He's in great spirits, and appreciates (and welcomes) all thoughts and prayers. He'll get his treatment at one of the best cancer treatment centers in the country, with pre-surgery tests scheduled in a couple of weeks. He's an amazing guy, with exactly the right attitude. I am indeed a member of CFR, and I haven't read the publication you're talking about. I have made it clear that I don't believe in a borderless hemisphere. In any event, CFR publishes a lot of stuff, a lot of which I find silly or disagreeable, and a huge amount of which winds up in the trash. It's always easy to blame job loss on illegals rather than on wage competition that is taking place throughout the economy. The U.S. economy creates roughly 1 million new jobs a month, and loses about 800,000. Frankly, the more I look into this stuff, the less gloomy I feel. Opponents of illegal immigration are making exactly the same arguments critics made against past immigration waves. As I mentioned at the beginning of the show, the one thing that unites all movements that express concern about immigration is a general pessimism about the state of society. For whatever reason, Republicans are pessimistic. The last great wave of anti-immigrant fervor melted after Pearl Harbor, when the previously despised Germans, Italians and Irish distinguished themselves in battle.
