Me, too:

A programming note. We have added Major Garrett in the first hour to talk about the Reid-Abramoff links. I've also got juicy stuff regarding WMDs -- and will announce that we're going to have Tony Shaffer on Monday to talk about Able Danger. We are really loaded for bear today.

Just getting back on the thread. Dave, I fear, was taking us places we didn't need to go. I had to trust my judgment - and let him go.

Loftus has been uneven in the past. He says he has delivered CDs to the Intel Committee with some pretty damning stuff. We'll see. But Hoekstra has a lot of other stuff before the committee, including Gen. Sada's claims.

I did know. One day, I'll persuade the folks at Davidson to give me one of those nice deals. BTW: I gather Mooresville is rather more developed than in my college days, when our primary reasons to visit were for food: An overnight bakery called "Grimm's," a What-a-burger and a pizza joint.

Johnnie,

I'm glad folks are amped up in Minnesota. The same thing is true in Maryland -- and black Republican candidates in Ohio and Pennsylvania could set loose earthquakes. I'm optimistic, too, but I'm getting the strong sense that an alarming number of conservatives around the country are apathetic right now. I'm trying in my own perverse way to light a fire.

Thanks for that. I didn't hear it the same way you did, or I would have called him on it. He said the coalition wasn't as big as it used to be. That's factually correct, but it doesn't particularly matter to me. I don't care if we're there alone. We're right.

Johnnie,

I'm loving this debate. I'm suggesting something that's wholly appropriate to a State of the Union Address -- indeed, ought to be mandatory, and that's differentiating leadership: Policies that embody the core philosophy of a political party, and have the added benefit of working. Here's a roster: further tax cuts, school choice, drilling for oil and reviewing environmental regulations that inhibit energy development without cleaning the planet, pusing a date certain for regulatory reform. This, to continue your martial analogy, is called "setting the battlefield." Over to you. I've got to do some talking now. (Feel free to call if you wish: 866-408-7669).

Miss Marple,

You have no idea what circles I frequent, but FYI, it doesn't include any hoity toity Washington folks. Most of my time is spent in glamorous places, like elementary school gyms, music lessons, teacher conferences, and hanging out with the family. Re: the NEA, 70,000 of the 100,000 jobs go to "regular" teachers. In any event, the point here isn't to shout, but to warn against making presumptions about "you people" (in this case, me). I do my best to be honest about what I think -- and as for the domestic stuff, I found it wanting. See the previous post regarding the various elements he laid out.

Tx,

Here's the take: The best-delivered SOTU in this presidency; the first half was spectacular, and made it obvious that there's only one significant player on the national stage when it comes to politics, and that's George W. Bush. I didn't like the Cartersque energy stuff and the Clintonesque 100,000 teachers. I believe, however, that Democrats killed themselves by whooping and hollering about their complete inaction on social security. The president still needs to find a domestic policy that sings -- and it ought to begin by putting the hammer down on out-of-control Congressional spending. The key to politics is picking the right fight and the right foe.
